It has recently been claimed that the profiles of the nuclear forbidden O III 4959, 5007 A emission lines in the type two Seyfert galaxy ESO 263-G13 = F427 are variable over intervals as short as 30 minutes. Long-slit spectroscopic observations at and around the nucleus of the galaxy are reported, and these lines are found to be spatially extended over at least 8 arcsec (N-S), with velocity profiles which vary rapidly with position. In particular, the forbidden O III 4959, 5007 A line profiles are double-peaked at the nucleus, but become single-peaked and narrower in spectra obtained with the slit displaced 1.25 arcsec or more to north or south of the nucleus. The profiles exhibit strongly enhanced red wing asymmetries on the north side and blue wing asymmetries on the south side of the nucleus. It is argued that the claimed time variablity is not real, but reflects small differences in slit centering and seeing from exposure to exposure.
