The energy distribution curves of elliptical galaxies, in the visible and inferred ranges, can be accounted for by an old stellar population of red giants and small mass dwarfs. In this simple model, however, the upturn observed in the far-UV (wavelength 2500 A) is unexpected and must be produced by another class of star with high effective temperature. Several possibilities have been proposed for this hot component, involving either young or evolved blue stars. In this paper, a model is discussed where the UV luminosity is a sum of three contributions: (1) young stars, formed in short bursts separated by long inactive periods, (2) nuclei of planetary nebulae, and (3) accreting white dwarfs. It is shown that good fits of the energy curves from the UV to the infrared are possible if the progenitors of type I sueprnovae represent only a few percent of all accreting white dwarfs.
