Supernova remnants emit over much of the electromagnetic spectrum, and by taking advantage of that fact, we can strive to understand their global characteristics in ways that are not always possible for other kinds of objects. Observations in the optical, ultraviolet, and especially over this combined range (when possible) can provide a wealth of information on chemical abundances, kinematics, and physical conditions and processes in the shock fronts and associated emission of young supernova remnants. I briefly review some of the historical and recent work in this spectral range as it pertains to young remnants of core collapse and Type Ia supernovae. .
