The effects of energy deposition due to the motion of the secondary in an expanding nova envelope are explored for 1 solar mass white dwarfs. Results of one-dimensional hydrodynamic calculations show that a common envelope phase can significantly accelerate mass loss from the system, thereby altering the outburst character. Such a rapid mass loss is necessary in order to explain the early appearance of a nebular spectrum and of X-ray emission, in a number of observed systems.
