The mechanics and energetics of the freeing of neutron superfluid vortices pinned to the nuclear lattice in the inner crust of a neutron star are studied. A rotating neutron superfluid is threaded by quantized vortex lines which, in the inner crust of a neutron star, can pin to the nuclear lattice that coexists with the superfluid. The activation energy for vortex unpinning is obtained by considering the energetics of stationary vortex configurations. For the pinning parameters of Epstein and Baym (1988 and 1991), the vortex line in the nuclear pinning region is found to be comparatively flexible, while for the interstitial pinning regions the vortex is stiff. The lower limit on the moment of inertia of a region involved in a glitch is estimated, the assumption being that giant glitches originate in the nuclear pinning or interstitial pinning regions.
