Analysis of z=0 galaxy surveys (the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey, HYPERLEDA/SDSS/2MASS) reveals a surprisingly abundant population of E/S0 galaxies residing on the blue color-stellar mass sequence below ˜ 1011 Msun. Despite similarities in structure and dynamics to traditional red-sequence early-type galaxies, blue-sequence early types differ in their star formation histories and in other properties linked to local/global environment and gas accretion history. The origin of blue-sequence early types may involve galaxy mergers or interactions, cold-mode gas accretion, and/or the growth and transformation of disks and bulges.
