As the Geotail spacecraft traverses the equatorial magnetotail at radial distances from Earth approximately 10 - 15 R E, it is well positioned for observation of plasma injections and magnetic field dipolarizations associated with substorms. Auroral images from the Earth Camera on board the Polar spacecraft provide maps of the concurrent expansion of auroral luminosities. With the aid of magnetic field models (Tsyganenko 1989 and 1996) the location of Geotail at the time of injection and dipolarization can be mapped to the auroral ionosphere. Likewise, the progression of auroral luminosities can be mapped to the equatorial magnetotail. Thus, to within the accuracies of the models, it is possible to determine the location of Geotail relative to the positions of onset and the subsequent expansion. This methodology has been used successfully to determine the behavior of plasmas in the high-beta plasma sheet near the localized region of substorm onset. We report now on our efforts to apply these methods to investigate the relationships among plasma injection, magnetic dipolarization, and the expansion of auroral luminosities.
