A large number of transient phenomena are observed in the dayside magnetosheath, magnetosphere, and ionosphere, all of which are specific signatures of the mechanisms that drive the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction and/or the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. This makes all of them important objects of investigation and understanding. A particular transient event is the ionospheric traveling convection vortices, for which the exact nature of the driver as well as the coupling mechanism remains a puzzle even after many years of investigations. Based on their characteristics it seems very likely that they are associated with magnetopause boundary waves during otherwise quiet magnetospheric conditions. On the other hand there is growing observational evidence that the driver of the ionospheric signature is not at the magnetopause but deeper inside the magnetosphere. This talk will present the background for this apparent discrepancy and will discuss possible solutions based on current generation mechanisms as well as plasma characteristics of the dayside magnetosphere. Particular emphasis will be put on recent observational results concerning the plasma characteristics and motion in the source region that have been obtained with Geotail data.
