By "PeV" gamma ray astronomy the author really means "Ultra High Energy" (UHE) gamma ray astronomy, which is a generally accepted term for observations of cosmic rays in the 1013 - 1017eV energy region. Whereas in other branches of astronomy the flux of particles at earth is relatively large and many can be detected in small time periods, the exceedingly small flux in the UHE region means long times must be spent collecting data to get a useful signal to noise ratio.
