Observations of the BL Lac objects Mkn 501 and Mkn 421 with the X-ray telescope on the Rosat Observatory during the All Sky Survey are presented. Orbit-to-orbit light curves over more than two days were established, and X-ray spectra were derived in the soft energy range of 0.1-2.4 keV. Mkn 501 was found to be fairly constant during the observation. Mkn 421, however, faded rapidly by 20 percent for more than one day and showed additional short-term variations. For both sources, power law model fits yielded photon indices which lie well within the ranges marked out by previous experiments. The resulting low energy absorption is in both cases consistent with the galactic interstellar absorption. A thermal origin of the soft X-rays is unlikely, but cannot be excluded by the present data.
