A total of 184 sources with X-ray fluxes between 10 to the -14th and 2 x 10 to the -13th cgs were discovered in ROSAT PSPC pointings covering 2.6 sq deg. The differential N(S) relation flattens significantly below 2 x 10 to the -14th cgs. In the 1 - 2 keV band the fraction of flux in resolved sources is 20 - 30 percent. The spectrum of the resolved sources is similar to that of the remaining background in the 1 - 2 keV range, both with a power law slope of -1.3. In the deepest pointing, centered on the North-ecliptic Pole, evidence is found of structure in the background on a scale of about 20 arcmin. This may represent a glimpse of the structure of the universe at redshifts of about 1.
