Results are presented on high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the brightest RV Tauri star R Scuti, carried out in 1989 during an irregular variation phase. These observations clearly demonstrate the existence of two shock waves in the atmosphere of this star, during each luminosity period of 142 d between two successive deep minima. The main shock, which appears just before a deep luminosity minimum, produces strong H-alpha emission during approximately 60-percent of the period. The weaker shock emerges out of the photosphere when the main shock vanishes within the high atmosphere; it remains visible only through the H-alpha emission during 35 percent of the period. Double absorption and emission Ti I profiles were also observed around the time of the appearance of the main and the secondary shocks.
