Results of an analysis of new complete uvby light curves reported by Gronbech et al. (1987) combined with results from the radial velocity study of Imbert (1987) are used to determine accurate absolute dimensions of the components of the southern detached late F-type eclipsing binary BW Aqr. The absolute dimensions of the A component are found to be (+ or - 2 percent) M = 1.39 solar mass, R = 1.78 solar radius; the dimensions of the more massive and cooler B component are M = 1.49 solar mass, R = 2.05 solar radii. These component masses place the BW Aqr in the mass range where stars begin to develop convective cores. It is found that standard models fit the less massive BW Aqr A well, but do not reproduce the observed properties of both components at identical ages. On the other hand, models including rate overshooting provide a reasonably satisfactory fit to both BW Aqr components at a common age of about 2.5 Gyr.
