This communication corresponds to the description of the ESO/CFHT key programme "arc survey". It is shown that it is actually possible to probe the distant Universe with gravitational arcs and arclets viewed through rich clusters of galaxies. These clusters act as natural giant gravitational telescopes that allow to map the dark matter content, and to magnify very distant field galaxies that otherwise would have been unobservable.
