The arguments used to predict the characteristics of primordial galaxies are first reviewed briefly. Actual problems in observing very faint objects are then explained by summarizing the nature of the foreground atmospheric emission. Some of the classical ingenious attempts to lower the upper limit of the integrated light from extragalactic background or to evaluate its spatial fluctuation are reviewed. Recent works using CCDs to image extremely faint objects are reviewed and the cosmological implications of these observations are summarized. It is, however, emphasized that there is as yet no common understanding as to what a primordial galaxy would look like. The importance of 8 m class telescopes with high observing capability at near infrared band is stressed to promote observational studies on formation and evolution of galaxies.
