We discuss the enhancements to scientific return of space physics missions using advanced on-board computation capabilities. Specifically, we discuss possible scenarios for the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission. We present several science enhancements which are possible starting with the continuous determination of plasma bulk properties ( e.g. density, velocity, temperature, heat flux) over the entire orbit. In more advanced scenarios, these data may be used in on-board decision making. Other possibilities include compression of kinetic data taken and hence greatly increasing the amount of data that can be returned. The implications for the mission science objectives are discussed.
