It is hoped that the development of UV and IR astronomy will result in further information on the cosmic distribution of 'cooler' material which has condensed into molecules. The discussion covers the characteristics of interstellar molecules and their formation. The photochemistry of interstellar molecules is examined and consideration is given to the H2 molecule. Finally, molecules in comets are examined.
