New JHK photometry of several highly reddened sources in the galactic plane is presented which, in combination with published photometry of sources behind dark clouds allows a determination of the value for the color excess ratio of 2.09 plus or minus 0.10. There is no evidence for variation in this ratio over the sky. It is also shown that nonlinearity effects are not serious for reddening less than E(J-H) of approximately +3.
