Photometric measurements of the shadow during the lunar eclipse of
September 16, 1978 are compared with theoretical results obtained using
a model of the pure atmosphere. Differences between the observed and
computed density of the shadow are partly due to the absorption in the
ozone layer and partly to the absorbing medium above the ozone layer.
