Phase transformations were investigated in six fluorite-type dioxides using a diamond anvil press together with laser heating. It was shown that the post-fluorite phase transformations form a small group which includes HfO2, ZrO2 and 'TbO2' which changes to a cottunite structure at pressures of 100 kbar at 1000 C. The larger cation group (from PbO2 to ThO2) transforms to a different orthorhombic modification at high pressures. The dioxides with a Ni2Si-related structure are the most closely packed dioxides known. It is proposed that all polymorphic structures of ZrO2 and the new phase found in the large cation dioxides are possible high-pressure models for the post-rutile and/or post-Fe2N phases of SiO2.
