Early CME work suggested the possibility of a bi-modal distribution of CMEs as characterized by the observed acceleration profiles above the coronagraph occulting disk heights (MacQueen and Fisher 1983). As a result of the acceleration profiles obtained from the new LASCO data, attention has been refocused on the question of whether there are two classes of CMEs corresponding to distinct driving mechanisms. Theoretically, it can shown (Chen 1996) that the size of the initial magnetic structure alone can account for the properties that (1) the peak acceleration occurs well below the edge of the occulting disk and that (2) beyond about 1 solar radius above the solar surface CMEs exhibit nearly constant speed or gradual acceleration. In other words, only one mechanism is sufficient to account for the apparent bi-modal distribution. In the present paper, we consider the more recent LASCO data and show that the observed range of acceleration profiles (Sheeley et al. 1999) can be produced using the flux rope model (Chen 1996) without invoking different driving mechanisms. Furthermore, we examine several CME events observed by both the LASCO and MK3/MK4 instruments, the latter being able to observe the CME dynamics down to about 1.1 Rs. By using MK3/MK4 data, we observe detailed acceleration profiles for both impulsive and gradual events and confirm that they fit the thChen, J. 1996, JGR, 101, 27499.eory.
