The interstellar medium surrounding the Sun and its heliosphere constitutes an outer source for heavy atoms and ions found within the heliosphere. Although the interstellar abundances are low, heavy atoms behave differently from hydrogen when entering the heliosphere. For example, a fraction of these heavy atoms penetrates into the inner solar system, and another fraction serves as source population for cosmic ray acceleration processes at the termination shock. By means of a particle Boltzmann model, the interaction of interstellar heavy neutral atoms and singly charged heavy ions with the (neutral and ionized) hydrogen of the heliosphere and the interstellar medium is investigated, both for a two-shock and for a one-shock heliosphere. The resulting distributions are presented and discussed.
