Forty-year interval plate series with intensive coverage on the nearby stars Wolf 294, Groombridge 1618, and Ross 128 were measured and analyzed for long-term telescope stability and upper limits on the masses of dark companions. The limits are found to be at the level of one to several Jupiter masses for periods ranging from four decades to one decade, respectively. Discussion is given of the statistics of Sproul astrometric binaries and expected discovery statistics for substellar mass companions of the nearby stars. A distant triple system was discovered in the field of Groombridge 1618.
