The structural MHD elements of the interplanetary disturbance observed from the IMP-8 on January 3-5, 1978 were identified. These included a head-on shock wave, a magnetic cloud, and its trail. It is shown that the main contribution to the formation of the Bz disturbance profile was made by the refraction of the IMF field lines at the head front of the shock wave, and their arrangement near the magnetic cloud. The observed features are in qualitative agreement with a model of disturbance generated by a powerful cloud moving rapidly through a moderately disturbed medium within a negative IMF sector.
