The profiles of several representative lines of neutral oxygen and sodium in the solar flux spectrum were studied by using the multi-parameter fitting method, in order to obtain information regarding the atomic parameters which play significant roles in the formation of these lines. Our main interest was focused on evaluating the empirical correction factor, which should be applied to the neutral-hydrogen collision rates calculated from the classical Drawin's cross section. Interestingly, the profiles of OI 7771--5 indicated almost no necessity for any correction, while those of NaI 8183/95 suggested that a reduction by a factor of ~ 1/10 is appropriate; in any case, such inelastic collisions with hydrogen atoms are still regarded as being important for the formation of these lines, and should not be neglected. This profile-fitting technique has also proved to be successful in empirically establishing the necessary corrections to the classical van der Waals effect damping constants of the sodium lines. It was also revealed that the chromospheric temperature rise has a significant influence on the line-core of OI 7771--5 (i.e., it makes the core deeper); this effect appreciably reduces the long-debated discrepancy between their theoretical and observed line-strengths near to the limb.
