The possible existence of periodicities in the release of seismic energy is investigated using a complete data set of globally distributed shallow earthquakes. Only main shocks occurring between 1898 and 1985 and with magnitudes greater than or equal to 7.0 are considered. Using Bath's formula, these magnitudes are converted into the seismic energy released. The detection of periodicities in the seismic energy release may be useful in the prediction of large earthquakes. The maximum entropy, fast Fourier transform, and power spectrum methods are used to analyze the earthquake time series and detect periodicities in seismic energy release.
