The galactic location of regions containing O stars in a low-density environment is discussed. It is shown that O stars can be used to define the galactic location and thickness of the gaseous spiral arms in the vicinity of the sun. The pattern thus established is similar to the outer regions of a typical Sb/Sc spiral galaxy. O stars may have migrated into low-density regions as a consequence of their peculiar velocities or they may have modified their original environment by blowing away the residual primordial interstellar cloud.
