The outburst behavior of SU UMa-type dwarf novae is discussed as a step in the formulation of a model to explain the properties of their observed supermaxima. The basic properties of all dwarf novae known to show periodic superhumps during their quasi-periodic long outbursts are reviewed, and data concerning the periodicities of these supermaxima are analyzed. It is pointed out that the supermaxima follow a linear ephemeris for 10-20 cycles and occasionally switch to another of two to three characteristic period values. It is suggested that supermaxima periodicities may be due to the enhancement of mass transfer through L1 due to the temporary alignment of two or more nonlinear g-mode oscillations of the secondary. A revised definition of the SU UMa sub-group is presented in terms of the characteristics of two types of outbursts observed. Candidate members of the SU UMa sub-group are indicated, and it is concluded that SU UMa stars are the most important group for the understanding of ultra-short-period cataclysmic binaries.
