Results of geological mapping of the surroundings of the Alpha Regio area on Venus are presented. Data from the Magellan spacecraft and a stratigraphic method were used to link all geological units in a common stratigraphic column. Ten units were established in the mapping area and were listed in order of age, from oldest to youngest. The geological history of the area studied may be divided into two episodes. In the first episode tesserae were formed. Tessera material formed a base layer which was buried under lava plains during the second or plain-forming episode. The presence of recent impact craters over all the areas studied indicates that the crater population developed after the cessation of endogenic activity. Crater density values and models of the crater forming flux were used to estimate the age at which stabilization occurred as 0.5-1 Ga.
