Stratospheric and lower mesospheric density structure was measured by the USU incoherent backscatter lidar above Logan Utah during the interval 1994 through 1998. The altitude profiles of mean density show a seasonal climatology that follows the MSIS atmospheric model predictions. The climatology of the atmospheric density perturbation variance (dr/r)2 vs. altitude does not vary in a regular way with season, nor is the peak variance in the winter when the orographic production of gravity waves is believed to peak. Advanced image processing techniques were applied to the nightly datasets, organized in 2-D altitude-time coordinates, to study the density perturbation variance (dr/r)2 as well as the 2-dimensional power spectral density and correlation functions at different seasons. After flatfielding or detrending the 2-D nightly images, PSD's were computed using standard 2-D FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) techniques to determine the altitude and spatial spectra and correlation lengths. We found that normally, the vertical and temporal PSD slopes closely approximated the values k-1/3 and k-5/3, respectively, attributed to saturated atmospheric gravity waves. Image processing allowed detection of apparent upward-moving gravity waves (downward moving phase velocity) upon other occasions. Preliminary results indicate that two conditions exist: a continuous, apparently saturated wave spectrum, and a wave spectrum showing discrete propagating gravity waves. Preliminary estimates of the energy contained in each component are presented.
