Direct microwave excitation of the magnetic minerals was first used to obtain archaeointensity values from ceramics. The microwave technique avoids heating the sample and therefore avoids laboratory alteration. A modification of the technique has now been developed for geological samples. The technique has been assessed by applying it to modern lava extruded in a known field. The results are very encouraging and allow the quality of the lava record to be examined. Palaeointensity analysis of older terrestrial and Martian samples will be presented.
