The peculiar stars of the upper main sequence offer the opportunity to study the interaction of atomic diffusion, pulsation, rotation and strong magnetic fields. For no other stars but the Sun is this possible in such detail, and for many of the Ap stars conditions are more extreme, so test physics beyond that in the Sun, even, for example, in the case of the interaction of p modes with sunspots. The roAp stars, in particular, allow the study of the upper atmospheres of A stars at levels that are transparent in all other stars, as a consequence of abundance stratification and non-uniform surface distributions. Illustrative examples are discussed.
