The DCIXS Compact X-ray Spectrometer will provide high quality spectroscopic mapping of the lunar surface. In so doing it will also flight test and demonstrate a major technological innovation in the design and construction of X-ray spectrometer instrumentation. Such instruments are essential for surface science studies of Mercury and other atmosphereless bodies in the inner solar system. DCIXS will achieve all this within a mass and power resource limit far smaller than previously consider practical. In particular, by dispensing with the need for actively cooling the solid state sensors, and with good radiation tolerance, DCIXS opens up many potential targets for future exploration. The complete instrument consists of a high throughput X-ray spectrometer which will perform the surface elemental mapping and an x-ray solar monitor to provide the monitoring necessary to recover absolute lunar elemental abundances.
