Axions are theoretically well-motivated particles and may constitute (a sizable fraction of) the cold dark matter revealed by astrophysics and cosmology, if their mass lies in the m>~μeV range. Alternatively, a mass in the range m<~eV would make them a subleading, hot dark matter component, comparable to relic neutrinos. Here we argue that light axions and axion-like particles with a two-photon vertex, consistent with all astrophysical and laboratory bounds, may lead to several kinds of signatures detectable by current or forthcoming satellite and ground-based gamma-ray telescopes.
