Optical (3700Å -- 8000Å) spectroscopy of four red (B-V > 1) low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies were observed with the Palomar 5m telescope. The results are intriguing. Of the three galaxies with sufficient signal for measurement, only one, [OBC97] C04-2, has a spectra similar to a `typical' late-type disk galaxy, albeit with lines ratios indicative of a higher metallicity than has been found in previous LSB galaxy studies. The other two galaxies show a considerable number of absorption features, indicating an older stellar population, yet with emission lines reminiscent of a much younger population. Combined, these observations strongly support the idea of LSB systems having low overall star formation rates punctuated by bursts of star formation.
