I shall review the observational evidences for galactic winds in starburst galaxies using the latest data in Xrays, optical and UV. In particular I will present new HST observations for winds as seen in the Lyman alpha emission line. All these point toward the extreme violence of stellar ejection processes that during a straburst inject a great deal of mechanical energy. The newly ejected matter being hot remains therefore partly undetectable. However I will discuss the possibility that most starburst galaxies have extended gaseous haloes and that at variance with previous models these can act as barrier that allow galaxies to retains their metals and enhance their abundance.
