I will summarize measurements of the global star-formation rate in the local universe. These are based on different techniques spanning a broad range in wavelengths from the vacuum ultraviolet through the radio. I will highlight the underlying assumptions and uncertainties in each technique, compare the results, and discuss the physical origin of the systematic differences in the populations of galaxies selected by these techniques. I will conclude with a brief overview of future prospects.
