Scientific paper
To investigate the tail region of the magnetosphere, NASA and the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science of Japan will undertake a joint project to develop, launch, and operate a scientific satellite designated Geotail. The orbit of Geotail differs from the orbits of other satellites previously flown and is optimized for the investigation of the unexplored regions of the magnetotail. Geotail will be the first to conduct observations in the distant tail beyond the lunar orbit and in the neutral sheet of the near-earth tail region.
