The deepest far-UV images of the sky ever taken are in the area of the Hubble Deep Fields. These were obtained over the last several years using the MAMA imagers of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. The observations provide constraints on the contribution of faint galaxies to the UV background, and on the fraction of Lyman continuum radiation escaping from star-forming galaxies at z 1. Star-formation rates estimated from the rest-frame UV for this sample will be compared to star-formation rates from other wavelengths. Constraints on the episodic nature of star formaation from the multi-wavelength UV through IR HDF data will also be discussed.
