A model of the magnetotail current is constructed. The Jy current is carried by the untrapped particles. It is shown that the phase space defines the current sheet dependence on the distance to the symmetric plane. If particles cross the sheet with small pitch-angles, their density near the neutral sheet increases and the density of particles with large pitch-angles decreases in the sheet. The description of the trapped particles shows that the integral current carried by trapped particles equals zero. These particles redistribute the current density. The effective width of the current sheet becomes equal to several Larmour radii of the trapped particles. This value is larger than the thickness of the current sheet carried by untrapped particles.
