The background of the Surface Force Adhesion (SFA) experiment dedicated to the investigation of surface forces in metals and performed on board of the EURECA Mission are discussed. The basic concept of the experiment is given. The preliminary results are presented, discussed and compared to the outputs of theoretical models. Experimental evidence of the action of surface forces in contact phenomena between solid metals has been reached for the first time. The experiment points out an original method to measure surface energy in solids.
