Advantages which are expected from space missions towards long period comets and the difficulties of planning such a mission are explained. Conventional missions cannot be planned due to the long waiting time for the comet to appear and the limited time span from discovery to launch. As interplanetary missions with small satellites are now feasible (Giotto experiment) the development of small launchers may solve the major difficulties regarding missions to long period comets, the only objects of the solar system that cannot be reached at present by other means.
