The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) will be a cryogenically cooled observatory for IR astronomy from space and is planned for launch early in the next decade. SIRTF will build on the scientific and technical results obtained by IRAS, COBE, and ISO, but it will go beyond these cryogenic space missions by making extensive use, for both imaging and spectroscopy, of large-format detector arrays. This paper discusses a newly modified baseline SIRTF mission and its scientific capabilities.
