The present theoretical understanding of sunspots is reviewed. Attention is given to the equilibrium of the spot (pressure equilibrium and thermal balance) and to stability problems (interchange instability and convective instabilities). Mechanisms for energy transport in the umbra are discussed, as are recent ideas on wave motions in the umbra and penumbra.
