In connection with the great stability of H3(+), the reaction H2+H2(+) yields H3(+)+H is exothermic, and H3(+) rather than H2(+) is the dominant hydrogenic molecular ion in a hydrogen discharge in the laboratory and in molecular clouds in space. An investigation was conducted with the objective to detect H3(+) in interstellar space. A study of the H3(+) spectrum in the laboratory is discussed, taking into account the observed frequencies of the nu 2 band of H3(+). Possibilities for observing H3(+) under interstellar conditions were investigated. A search involving observations of seven infrared sources was performed, taking into account the results of the investigation of the observation possibilities. The negative results of the search set an upper limit for the infrared flux to be considered.
