Chemical evolution models have been developed which assume instantaneous recycling and consider both the effects of mass loss in massive and intermediate mass stars and the initial mass function of the solar neighborhood given by Serrano (1978). The carbon and oxygen yields derived from these models indicate that a C/O ratio in the vicinity of 0.58 in the solar neighborhood can only be justified for the case where, during the advanced evolutionary stages of intermediate mass stars, the ratio of the convective mixing length to the pressure scale height is greater than about 2.0.
