The spectroscopic variability of the unusual Ap star HR465 has been discussed by Wolff and Preston (1970), who show that the sharp-lined spectrum at the rare-earth-minimum phase is similar to that of many other Ap stars of the magnetic sequence. Studies of the rare-earth-maximum phase in the early 1960s had shown it to have a high density of lanthanide rare-earth lines, in addition to Hg II 3984 A. Although the critical phase of HR465 has been unavailable until recently because of its 22-24 year period, three 2.4 A/mm spectrograms of HR465 taken in August 1981 show that the spectrum again closely resembles that of the early 1960s, with a recurrence of the rare-earth-maximum phase.
