The model problem of a single massless scalar field, minimally coupled to the gravitational field, provides one of the simplest ways to investigate the nature and consequences of nonlinearity in general relativity. With large-scale computations and advanced numerical techniques, it is now possible to make detailed survey of the phenomenology of the model. This paper summarizes such a survey and reveals several intriguing nonlinear phenomena arising in the regime where black holes form or 'almost form'.
