We demonstrate by explicit computation that an SU(2) gauge instanton
does alter the spectrum of a fermion in an external gravitational field.
This is contrary to results reported in the literature. Nevertheless
when all topological boundary invariants are included the index of the
Dirac operator is not changed by the field.
