The infrared development of novae is examined from the point of view of the behavior of the underlying system. The various transition-related phenomena are described, and it is suggested that they are better understood without invoking the rapid formation of large grains. It is shown that novae surrounded prior to outburst by small graphite grains begin to radiate significantly at infrared wavelengths when the photospheric flux in the visual has declined by about 4 mag from maximum, and that this gives rise to the coincidence between infrared development and transition. Nine classical novae have been discovered so far in the infrared and at least seven show unambiguous evidence for substantial thermal emission by dust grains.
